Fairy story - Shen I

Long ago when Yao was emperor of the Middle Kingdom he one day sighted a large dragon flying through the clouds. Seated on its back was a beautiful young maiden.
Curious as to who she was, the emperor sent his greatest archer, Shen I after them. Shen I, who had magic wings, flew after them until he reached a large portal set into a huge mountain.
The entrance was guarded by a ferocious beast which Shen I quickly killed with his bow. He then entered the portal and saw before him a beautiful woman surrounded by many lovely fairies. He realized that he was in the presence of Hsi-wang mu, the Queen-mother of all of the fairies.
When asked the purpose of his visit he explained that the emperor had sent him in search of the young maiden who rode through the heavens on a dragon's back. The queen informed him that the maiden was her daughter and invited him to join them in a feast.
To show his appreciation for being treated as a special guest, Shen I with the help of the fairies, built for the queen and her fairies sixteen palaces of white jade, agate and fragrant wood.
As a parting gift he was given a Pill of Immortality which would give him eternal youth. On returning home he put the pill away meaning to take it later.
Before he had a chance, however, his wife, Chang O, found the pill and swallowed it. At once she became immortal and rose in the air until she disappeared on the moon.
Dizzy from her flight she vomited the outer coating of the pill and it turned into a white hare. Ever after that the lady lived on the moon in her cold Crystal Palace with a small white hare at her side.
The gods took pity on Shen I who had lost both his wife and the pill and flew him to the Palace of the Sun. There they presented him with a golden plumaged bird as a net. It is this bird who daily awakens the people on earth with his crowing.
